I was so looking forward to Friday evening – just us on our own. I started to prepare a special meal and Charlie opened some wine and we chatted and worked together in the kitchen. He mentioned that he was a bit concerned, his students weren’t as friendly as they usually are. I thought this might be the opportunity to talk about what I’d overheard, but his phone rang. It was one of Charlie’s students with details of a website or something. Charlie asked me if I had a notepad so that he could write it down for later. “It’s in the top drawer of my desk” I told him and he went off to get it. All of a sudden I realised what I’d done, every thing went in slow motion as I waited for the storm.
After a couple of minutes, Charlie charged back into the kitchen, he looked so cross I couldn’t believe it was him at first. He yelled at me “What is this supposed to be?” I could hardly speak – I didn’t know how to explain. “Why didn’t you say something before?” I stuttered out that I was going to tell him but I hadn’t found the right moment. I asked him how he would have told me if he’d been in my place. He ripped the pages out of the notebook, threw it down, grabbed his jacket and left the house. The house was very, very quiet all of a sudden. I sat and waited.
After half an hour the phone rang, it was Laura. As her name was in my notes he’d been round to see her and Dan. Laura had kept her promise, Dan didn’t know a thing. However Dan and Charlie had had cross words because Dan told Charlie exactly what he thought of Carolynne. Laura said that she thought Charlie was heading for where Carolynne was staying. She asked me if I’d like her to come round, I said not to. Her voice sounded pretty shaken. I hope that Charlie hadn’t yelled at her. After I’d finished talking with Laura I ran upstairs and cried and cried. Later I went downstairs and tried to play the piano for a while, but couldn’t concentrate on anything. After an hour or so I went to bed and waited for Charlie to come home…..
